THE FOURTH OF JULY
It is the perfect night
The moon glows down at me,
As if expecting something
The sky is blanketed with a curtain of stars
Fireflies dance,
And when their lights are on,
They are camoflauged
Against the night sky
Children run and play
This will be their latest bed time,
Since New Year's
Adults are chatting,
And preparing...
For what?
Some are aware
To others it will be a surprise
Everyone is gathered
Sitting on blankets,
Huddled with family and friends
Expecting
Waiting
There is silence
Last minute preparations are made
Soon the performance will begin
WOOSH!
BANG!
Sizzle
WOOSH!
BANG!
Sizzle.
Over and over
Again
Some gaze in amazement
Some cover their ears
Others just sit back and enjoy
An array of colors,
Though mostly red, white, and blue
Soaring through the sky, like airplanes
But stopping in midair, bursting
Fading, then disappearing
A rocket makes a beeline
Into the atmosphere
It stops, almost falling
Then explodes,
Like a watermelon smashing into a million pieces,
But more neat and alligned
The introduction, the body, and the conclusion
The finale
WOOSH! WOOSH! WOOSH! WOOSH!
BANG!!!!!!!
All at once,
They shoot up,
Explode,
And sizzle away
It is breathtaking
Everyone is silent
Too shocked to speak,
But only for a moment
Applause,
Then chatter
Cleaning up
Saying goodbye
Clearing out
The space is empty
Only to be remembered in our minds
That wonderful night
We will never forget
The food,
Activities,
Entertainment,
All sideshows
For the main event
Literary Elements:
The literary elements I used were....
Onomatopoeia: I used this when I used sound words, such as "WHOOSH!" and "BANG!" I used these to create a visual through sound. If the reader could hear what the fireworks sounded like, then they would be able to imagine it in a way that they could not with only visual imagery.
Similes: I used similes in a few places. For example, I described the fireworks as a watermelon smashing into a million pieces. This gives the reader a visual that helps them create an image in their mind and it helps them understand the poem better and that is why I chose to add similes in my poem.
